Chapter 4

The Echo of the Breaking

The bargain had been struck. He did not yet know what he had purchased, or what collecting it would cost.

The bargain had been struck.

Yueguang did not know yet what he had purchased. He knew what he had offered — Wei Měng’s word, Wei Měng’s weight, the authority of a man whose reputation he was still learning to carry. He knew what he had bought with it. He did not know what the purchased thing would cost when it came due.

The officials had gone south. The young man near the streambed was still alive. These were facts. What they were evidence of was a separate question.

He had spent twelve years reading the documents that emerged from moments like this one. The records always began after the breaking — they catalogued the outcome, assigned the cause, named the ones who had not survived the terms. What they never recorded was the interval: the hours or days between when the fracture began and when it became visible enough to write down.

He was in that interval now.

He had thought, once, that knowing what broke and what held was the useful part of historical study.

He was learning that the echo arrived before the breaking did.

About this chapter

Chapter Four inherits the question Chapter Three left open: what was given up to make the bargain hold? Lü Yueguang, trained to read outcomes from the evidence that survives them, is now inside the interval that the historical record cannot contain — the hours before a fracture becomes visible enough to be written down.

The title The Echo of the Breaking names this interval precisely. An echo does not precede its source. Hearing it means the source has already passed. Yueguang, who has spent his career reading what broke and why, must now recognise a cause while he is still inside it — without access to the outcome that would tell him what it means.

The Echo of the Breaking is the fourth chapter of Book One. It asks what use historical knowledge is when the situation it describes is still in motion.
