Chapter 12

The Ink and the Ache

The blow came from behind, and the street offered no warning at all. Whatever was waiting for him, he never saw it coming.

27 July 2026

Sun Liàng’s warning was still ringing in his ears when he stepped out of the noodle shop and into the dark. Forgotten family names, the old coworker had called them — not idle history, but something someone still wanted buried. Yueguang had laughed it off, or tried to. He had a flight to catch and twelve years of caution telling him nothing that happened in a Shenzhen back street could touch him now.

He was wrong before he finished the thought.

There was no struggle, no chance to turn. Just the street tilting, the bag sliding from his shoulder, and a darkness that had nothing to do with the hour. Someone — or something — had been waiting for him long before he knew he was being followed.

He never got a look at who it was.

What waits for a man on the other side of a blow he never saw coming?

The Ink and the Ache

About this chapter

Chapter Twelve picks Lü Yueguang up from the ground he fell to — and asks what a man carries with him across a threshold he didn’t choose to cross. The Ink and the Ache is a chapter about waking into consequence: the distance between the world he left and the one he lands in, and the price already being asked of him before he has his bearings back. It asks how much of a man survives the crossing, and what a man is expected to pay to survive what comes next.
